This month’s book pick is The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. James Baldwin is a black writer who wrote some seriously wonderful fiction and non-fiction at the height of the civil rights movement. I chose this book because 1. it’s Black History Month and 2. because this is on pretty much every list for essential reading for perspectives on racism in America.
At the time, and still today, James Baldwin was one of the sharpest, most insightful voices about the plight of African Americans. This really is essential reading, and it still feels urgent and relevant today.
If you are interested in watching a really amazing documentary about Baldwin, I highly recommend I Am Not Your Negro. Be prepared–it’s a tough watch.
Can’t wait to discuss this book with all of you!
